Often when tying various patterns I look for that bit extra that will help the fly stand out and I've found that a bit of flash (careful not to over do it) will often do just that. Whether it is to make the fly look like bait with the small amount of flash providing the deception of motion, or perhaps a hot spot for a target for the fish to attack. I often use dubbing for that effect. The colors available for the flash do what I am looking for when tying these patterns. Be it for fish in the surf, lagoons, or warm water, dubbing often will provide that little extra providing the deception of motion, necessary visibility or confidence to the angler in the pattern, I find it to be put to good use for all of the above.
