Capt. Scott MacCalla's 3 Favorite Flies for Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon
Captain Scott MacCalla has been guiding the Indian River Lagoon, Mosquito Lagoon, and Louisiana for many years and is on the water more days than not. That means he knows exactly what to throw when targetting redfish, snook and trout in our backyard, the Indian River, and Mosquito Lagoon. We sat down with Scott and he discussed his 3 Go-To Patterns.
Swiss Army Slider
This Fly is great for targetting Redfish in seagrass or over sand bottom. "This fly comes in multiple different colors, however i prefer fishing the black and purple. It really stands out in our water." The weedguard helps this fly slide through the grass without getting caught and blowing your shot and catching that tailing redfish.
Blind Faith Merkwan
The Blind Faith Merkwan is another fantastic redfish pattern. EP body, with a craft fur tail and just the right amount of flash. "This fly fishes really well over a sandy bottom where you need more natural colors to get a positive reaction out of the fish". This fly with the olive head and tan tail is a must have in your redfish box.
Everglades Special
The Evergaldes Special, by Enrico Puglisi is a "catch all " fly. When poling the shorelines of the Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon, you'll never know what you may run into. "One mangrove may have a school of snook, and right around the corner is a laid up gator trout, with some tailing redfish in the distance. You need a fly that does it all." This baitfish pattern does just that. Tied on a hook strong enough for anything, everyone should keep a few of these handy.
